Matrix Reloaded, The (Two Discs)

Starring:
Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, Jada Pinkett Smith, Monica Bellucci

Directed by:
The Wachowski Brothers

The Story
Neo, Morpheus, Trinity and their crew continue to battle the machine that have enslaved mankind in the Matrix. As we know from the first film, the matrix needs people to use as a power source and it provides them with a phoney virtual reality to live in. More people are waking up out of the Matrix to live in the real world. Six months have gone by, a quarter of a million people have escaped and the human resistance is gathering strength in Zion, the last real-world city. This city is close to the Earth’s core. The human colony is thriving and plotting a full rebellion against the machines. Morpheus is now revealed to be a military leader.

Reloaded and Revolutions are two halves of a single story. In this the first story, Neo (Keanu Reeves) finds out more about his abilities. He has honed his skills and is now able to fly. He now is convinced that he is actually “The One”.

However, the machines have discovered the location of Zion deep underground. The humans have only thirty-six hours before thousands of the squid-like sentinels tunnel down to attack it.

The only hope is to track down the Keyholder. To be reached, the evil guardians, The Twins, must be passed. They are ghost-like assassins who can disappear and reappear at will.

More Kung Fu, More Visual Effects

The writers/directors Andy and Larry Wachowski have made a film which features more sophisticated Kung Fu fight sequences and even more startling visual effects. The effects from the original film have been much copied and the brothers were determined to come up with new ideas which will be much more difficult to copy. In one sequence, we find that Agent Smith has developed the ability to replicate himself and Neo finds himself taking on one hundred copies of the Agent at the same time.

There is a sensational sequence involving cars, motorcycles and trailer trucks on the Freeway 101 that runs from downtown Los Angeles to Burbank (Where the film studios are). This last 14 minutes and has spectacularly choreographed leaps through the air from vehicle to vehicle. Trinity weaves expertly in between the traffic on a 9000cc motorcycle.

We are also there when Neo meets up with the Architect who devised the matrix, but he has some surprises for us.

The relationship between Neo and Trinity hots up and “is not so pure”.

The film comes to an abrupt end as the story continues on in the next edition.
The filming took eighteen months and took place in and around Sydney, Australia.
