When we left Rio at the end of Shenmue 1 he was boarding a ship to go to Hong Kong, at the start of this game he arrives. Within five minutes of being there he nearly gets run over by a biker chick called Joy, And gets his bag stolen by a kid called Wong. When you eventually get your bag back you find that all the cash has gone but luckily the Phoenix Mirror is still there. After Joy saves you from a fight see suggests a hotel to stay in for free, she also gets you a job at the docks. The next day you start your main quest of finding Masterc Chen, the man who wrote a letter to your father shortly before he was killed...
The Gameplay
This is pretty much the same game as the Dreamcast original, the only new feature is the camera that you can use to take pictures. For those who haven?t played the original i?ll go over the basics. There are 3 types of modes. Fighting which works like most Beat-em-ups, QTE?s which is like a cutscene that you take part in. Directions or buttons appear on the screen and you have to hit them in time to effect the scene (funner than it sounds) and Exploration which is pretty much like a old school point and click but in 3d and more fun. There are also loads of side missions and jobs to get. To get the most out of the game you should do most of these ( the duck racing is great fun ). Add to all this a fully usable arcade and gambling games and you really can stretch this game out.
Graphics
On the Dreamcast the graphics were impressive, they?ve been tweaked a bit but not greatly. Most of the buildings are greatly detailed as are the characters but the cars look like they did on the Saturn which is pretty perfetic. Having said that the Water effects are very good and the Forest is a joy to walk through. But on the XBox it should be more detail, less rough edges and more quaility.
Lifespan
If you rush through the game just doing the minimal you?ll complete it in 2-3days. But if you take your time and enjoy the expierience whilst doing the side missions it will take just over a week. It has alot of replay value unlike most games in it?s genre, you can do many situations differently which affects the characters around you. There are no different endings but thats because it has a good story and it can only go one way with that story..
Overall
Probally Dreamcasts finest game gets the conversion it deserves. Just as fun as on the Dreamcast if not more so. This should suit everybodys taste of gameplay. The fighting has been tweaked, and the new camera mode is alot of fun. Some may think its slow paced and boring but i love it!
