A film based on a theme park ride, especially one as boring as the Disney ride ?The Pirates of the Caribbean? isnt exactly a great premise for the film of the same name. But fortunately having the same name is where the similarities between the two end.
Unlike the ride, ?Pirates of the Caribbean : The Curse of the Black Pearl? is a 2 hour thrill ride full of laughs, brilliant acting and the odd scare or two thrown in as well.
Plot Summary
After the Governor?s daughter, Elizabeth Swann, is kidnapped by an evil group of pirates, loveable rogue Captain Jack Sparrow and Blacksmith Will Turner team up to rescue her - each with his own reasons. Jack?s is to reclaim his beloved ship, The Black Pearl, and Will?s is to save his childhood friend and love of his life. But unbeknown to them, the evil Captain Barbossa and his crew are cursed and their true skeletal forms are only revealed in the moonlight. Barbossa and his crew must now use the necklace Elizabeth owns to try and lift the curse upon them and return them to their normal state for good.
Johnny Depp is brilliant as Captain Jack Sparrow in one of his best roles to date. Depp is made for the role and gets loads of laughs as the hilarious Jack. There?s no doubt that without Jack Sparrow, there would be no film. Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Kiera Knightley as Elizabeth Swann also add some humour as the two romantic leads and bring in some of the more ?serious? scenes of the film. Geoffrey Rush, although barely recognisable, is good as the evil Captain Barbossa who?ll stop at nothing to life the curse off of himself and his crew. You might also recognise The Office?s Mackenzie Crook (who played Gareth) as the wooden eyed Ragetti who although seriously creepy, is hilariously funny as well.
On the whole, the acting is brilliant, the action scenes although there are only a handful, are thrilling and there are laughs a minute. It might be a little scary for younger children but other than that this is for the whole family. This is truly the must see film of the summer and i?d recommend it to anyone. Forget all the other films like Lara Croft and American Pie : The Wedding, Pirates of the Caribbean is definetely the film to see this summer.
Ont he whole, I?d give Pirates of the Caribbean an amazing 10/10 - even though Johnny Depp deserves that just for his acting!
